Katherine Cunningham
Executive Director
My name is Katherine Cunningham, I am the Executive Director of Sunflower Early Learning Society.

I grew up on Vancouver Island in the Ladysmith area on a farm. I started working with children when I was just 16, I became a coach at the local elementary school and immediately knew that working with children was what I was destined to do!
I went to North Island College for my ECE Certificate and learned so much, I fell in love with the Reggio Emilia philosophy. I became involved with my local ECEBC branch and became an advocate for educators in the field. After graduating, I began working in a centre and shortly after that I opened a group childcare centre of my own. It was in the small community of Union Bay and was licensed for 16 children ages 3-5. That was when I found my passion for leadership, seeing how I could work alongside educators to help them reach their goals was my new mission, and it still is today.

Once I moved to the city I joined on as a director at a corporate childcare centre but left soon after as I realized that the corporate lifestyle and philosophy of care just wasn’t for me! One of the many things that excites me about Sunflower is the Non-Profit Model of care.

One of the things I love the most about working in childcare is the amazing and diverse families I get to interact with. I strongly believe that every family has a uniqueness about them that helps to make our communities stronger.
Some other fun facts about me are...
